There is no such thing as “what could have been.” Only, “what is not meant to be.”
I believe everything happens for a reason. What’s meant to be will be. What’s not meant to be…won’t be.
It’s as simple and complicated as that.
This goes for anything in life. Whether it’s looking back and regretting not taking a chance, or “I could have done this, but didn’t” and “I should have done that instead.” Life is crazy. We live and we learn. There are moments to look back on and regret, and there are moments to look back on and learn from.
The idea of “what could have been”…doesn’t exist. If it was meant to happen, it would have. If it didn’t, it wasn’t meant for you in the first place.
Whether that’s a romantic interest that didn’t pan out, a class you didn’t take, life choices…the list goes on and on, but you get the point.
What could have been, is just that—What could have been. Think of it like a possibility, but a path you weren’t meant to walk.
Like in a novel, there’s a million different ways the plot could turn, but the author can only write one. I mean, I guess they could write them all and see which one they wrote the best and edit it to perfection—but real life doesn’t work like that…obviously.
God is the writer of our lives, but we choose the narrative. It’s our choice whether to trust in His plan, or go our own way. And when going our own way fails, God will create a way for us to walk back to Him.
The point is, there are a million ways life could go, and there’s no point in regretting going one way and not the other. Maybe you could have gone in one direction, but for whatever reason you didn’t and chose another. Maybe you regret that now. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you wonder what so many people do, “what could have been” if I had___(fill in the blank).
There is no such thing as “what could have been.”
One of the greatest lessons of life is to simply live with no regrets.
The pain of regret is real, I get it, but the truth is, it just wasn’t meant to be.
So we move forward.
Look back and learn, but don’t keep looking back. Because if you’re listening to your heart, to that voice inside you that tells you you’re doing alright, then you’re on the right path. You just have to keep moving. Have faith. Take one step at a time. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
And you don’t have to wonder about the “what could have been” if you’re focusing on the the what is: Your life. Right now.
