The Climb

“If you don’t climb the mountain, you can’t see the view.” Who hasn’t heard that saying before?

It’s supposed to be a quote of hope. A reminder that the higher you climb, the harder you work…the more worth it in the end.

It’s worth it because at the end of the climb, you finally see the view.

Looking down at how far you’ve come. Looking out into the world beyond. It’s almost like finding the meaning of life and seeing for the first time.

But sometimes, the view is just another mountain. Another obstacle to climb. Sometimes the view isn’t even what you thought. Maybe it’s not the sight you wanted to see.

We can’t see what’s on the other side of the mountain. We don’t really know what the view is when we start. The truth is, paths change. Sometimes we get lost along the way.

Maybe a trail was overgrown and you have to find a different route to get to the final destination so you can see that magnificent view which can’t be seen from below.

Will it be worth it? Will the climb, the sweat, maybe even tears…be worth it?

I think sometimes what we think we want out of life, isn’t what we really want. You know what I mean? Like sometimes we think the path we’re headed down is the best one, until suddenly you realize the view you are climbing toward, isn’t the path you meant to walk. Or, sometimes you reach that view and realize all that walking was for nothing because this isn’t the view you thought you would see.

Sometimes what we think we want out of life, isn’t what we actually want. And sometimes, we have to climb that mountain in order to realize this.

Maybe you reach the end and realize…it’s time to find a new path.

I think of moments in my own life when I climbed a mountain. I mean this both literally and figuratively. Ha! But seriously, there are memories I look back on, like when I traveled to India alone, that I see how I had to climb a mountain in order to see what was on the other side.

Everything looks different from above. It’s a place to self-reflect, to be proud, to understand who you are and the person you are becoming.

There isn’t necessarily a straight path up a mountain. Don’t we usually take switchbacks? Sometimes, we have to find a different path to bring us to the top.

Maybe you climbed the mountain only to realize the view is another mountain. I think life is full of mountains. Challenges to overcome. Life isn’t easy; nothing worth fighting for ever comes easy, right?

That’s okay. Just because it’s difficult, doesn’t mean we stop moving.

Life is a climb. Keep climbing. One step at a time is all it takes to get to where you belong.

Because one day we will see the view. We just have to keep climbing the mountain, maybe even mountains, to get there. But I choose to believe it will be worth it and we will see the view. One day.
